Katherine Gorge
Just 29km from Katherine is Nitmiluk National Park. This series of thirteen gorges along the Katherine River has become one of the Northern Territory's main tourist attractions. Throughout the park there is an abundance of wildlife and waterfalls, and high on the gorge walls are examples of rock art. You can explore the gorge system on a half-day river cruise or by helicopter or light plane from Katherine. If you have more time and energy, there are over 100km of walking tracks. There are also canoes for hire at the river and paddling up the Katherine Gorge is a rewarding experience, it enables you to get close to wildlife and have the leisure of going at you own pace. The gorge is a canoeist’s paradise with sandstone cliffs and crystal clear waters. The waters are also safe for swimming. You may wish to canoe for half a day, a full day or maybe overnight and stay in one of the bush camps located up the gorge.
Fishing is another popular past time in the gorge. Only lures are permitted and there are laws governing the size and the amount of fish you're permitted to catch so check this out with the rangers before hand.
Edith Falls is an area in the Territory that can not be driven past especially when travelling from Kakadu to Katherine. The access to Edith Falls is off the Stuart Highway 42km north of Katherine and then you drive in another 19km on bitumen road. Has a beautiful series of waterfalls and pools, cascading into a lake, ideal for swimming. There are trails to the top to enjoy the view and cool off in the pools there. There are facilities for camping here as well. There is a 66 km walking trail from Nitmiluk Gorge to Edith Falls, the Jatbula walk, which with proper preparation, can easily be done in 4 to 5 days, offering magnificent scenery and waterfalls on the way.
