Litchfield National Park
Litchfield National Park is a day trip away from Darwin providing the opportunity to swim in crystal-clear rock pools and waterfalls. It is about a 1 -1.5 hour drive from Darwin and all the best sights are accessible with a normal car. Open eucalyptus woodland, dense tropical rainforest and magnetic termite mounds are found in Litchfield National Park, which is just 130 km south west of Darwin. In the dry season you can easily get to most of the waterfalls that plunge from the rocky escarpment of the Table Top Range that plunge into refreshing pools.
During the wet, some roads, waterfalls and pools are closed to the public because of flooding. A few areas of Litchfield Park are only accessible in a 4WD, but the most popular attractions can be visited at any time of year with a 2WD. The walking tracks are no longer than 2.2 kilometers. Today, a quarter of a million locals and tourists each year make the journey to Litchfield Park and it is a must see when visiting Darwin. You will not be disappointed. Camping in the park is encouraged but if you want to stay overnight camping fees do apply. There is no admission fee into the park. The 3 most popular attractions in the park are:
Wangi Falls
The largest falls in Litchfield are Wangi Falls, on the western edge of the Park. Here you can swim and snorkel in a large plunge pool set amidst rainforest. In the wet season, the flow of water is awesome. Wangi Falls has a large picnic area and kiosk which is open all year round, however swimming may not always be possible due to powerful currents in the plunge pool after heavy rain.. An interpretive nature trail leads from the camping and barbecue area to the top of the falls and back down to the car park.
Florence Falls
Buley Rockhole
Within a short walking distance of Florence Falls is Buley Rockholes. Buley has a series of spa-like pools and waterfalls where you will find your own spot to swim and relax.
