Cost of supermarket foodBecause most hostels in Darwin have good cooking facilities, the cheapest and healthiest way of eating is by buying your food at a local supermarket and cooking it yourself. The two biggest supermarket chains in Australia are Woolworths and Coles. Coles is called Safeway in some states of Australia. Both of these food chains can be found at nearly any shopping centre or suburb in Australia. In Darwin both Woolworths and Coles are found in the middle of the city centre. Both of these supermarkets are about a 1 or 2 minutes walk from most hostels on Mitchell ST. Backpacking in Darwin will give you an average price of what supermarket food costs in Darwin.
